A historic seventh-century Chinese pagoda-style mosque located in the centre of the Muslim quarter just off the Muslim bazaar, the Great Mosque of Xian is the largest and best preserved of the early mosques of China. Built primarily in the Ming Dynasty when Chinese architectural elements were synthesized into mosque architecture, the mosque resembles a fifteenth century Buddhist temple with its single axis lined with courtyards and pavilions.

★★★★★
If I could rate this masjid higher, I would! It is amazing as a tourist sight and even more amazing as a masjid. The Great Mosque is over 1200 years old and is completely Chinese in character with traditional architecture. The mosque has a few historical exhibits around the beautifully gardened and decorated courtyard complete with koi swimming in large urns. The prayer space is decorated with a complete wood carving of the Quran in both Arabic and Chinese that stretches across 3 wall of the masjid. Sisters prayer space is limited but they are welcome to enter the main hall after salat. If you do arrive during prayer time, try to stick around afterward for beautiful dhikr and recitation.
